During the final month of the 2024 campaign, the Red Sox got a glimpse of what the future holds with Luis Guerrero in the bullpen. The right-hander made his MLB debut on September 8 and made a great first impression. Guerrero will still have to battle for a spot on the roster in spring training, but he made the most of his first stint in the majors.
The talented 24-year-old did not allow an earned run in nine games while striking out nine batters. He also held opponents to a .182 batting average and showed excellent control, only walking two batters. In a small sample size, Guerrero looked like he belonged in the majors.
Over the last few weeks, Guerrero was able to keep batters off balance with his unique arsenal. His pitch mix includes a fastball that tops out at 100 miles per hour and a splitter that dives out of the zone. The Dominican native can also fool hitters with a slider that reaches 91 miles per hour. Due to Guerrero’s ability to attack a hitter in a variety of ways he is hard to barrel up.
Although there is alot to like about Guerrero he also showed an ability to work out of trouble. When batters did reach base he didn’t let games get out of control. That is something that the bullpen did not excel at as the Red Sox fell out of playoff contention in the second half.
Heading into the 2025 campaign, Guerrero figures to be an important piece. He has thrived regardless of the level and got some high-leverage situations in Worcester before being promoted. The only question that remains is what role he will get when the final roster is set.Â
Regardless of what offseason moves the Red Sox make, they have at least one promising reliever in Guerrero. He played multiple roles last year and will be looking to build on his impressive start to his big league career.Â
