Luis Guerrero impresses in first spring training outing
In his first MLB stint last year, Luis Guerrero showed that he has the potential to be a dominant reliever. On Saturday, he picked up right where he left off with an impressive spring training debut for the Red Sox. As the 24-year-old battles for a roster spot, he is off to an excellent start.
Against the Rays, Guerrero did not allow a run in one inning of work. He also struck out three batters and issued one walk. While it was only his first outing, Guerrero had excellent control of the strike zone and overpowered hitters with his velocity. It was a reflection of what he did last year.
After a solid season in Triple-A, Guerrero finally got a call to the majors on September sixth. He was stellar in nine games, allowing one unearned run while striking out nine batters. The talented righty held opponents to a .182 batting average and recorded the first three holds of his career. Although the Red Sox did not make the postseason, Guerrero was a bright spot in the final month.
As the Red Sox finalize their bullpen plans, Guerrero will be a player to watch. He has little to prove in the minors after posting a 3.31 ERA in 42 games last year. Guerrero has also shown that he can get big-league hitters out. The Red Sox may also be without two relievers on opening day due to injury, which could help Guerrero lock down a spot.
While Guerrero has only made one appearance, he flashed his potential and made getting the Rays hitters out looking effortless. As long as he continues to build on his success, it will be hard for the Red Sox to keep him off the roster. The former 17th-round pick has the potential to be a valuable seventh or eighth-inning arm.
Regardless of where he starts the 2025 campaign, Guerrero should make an impact in 2025 as the Red Sox look to end their playoff drought.
