Over the last two years, Luis Guerrero has frustrated minor league hitters while shattering expectations. The 23-year-old has appeared in 76 games during that stretch and only allowed 28 runs. As a result, he will enter the 2024 season with higher expectations than ever before.
During the 2023 campaign, Guerrero saw his stock rise every time he stepped on the mound. In 49 appearances between two levels, he struck out 68 batters and held opponents to a .157 batting average. He also was trusted in high-leverage situations and recorded a career-high 19 saves.
Due to his play, the Dominican native represented the Portland Sea Dogs at the Futures game. His accolades didn't stop there, as Guerrero was an Eastern League Postseason All-Star and the Red Sox minor-league reliever of the year. The talented right-hander was no longer being overlooked.
While the Red Sox already have a deep bullpen, Guerrero could factor into the mix at some point during the 2024 campaign. He finished last season in Worcester, making six appearances. While he struggled in that stretch, he will get the opportunity to fine-tune his game and adjust to Triple-A hitters.
As Guerrero looks to build on his success, his main area of focus will be control. Last season, he walked 37 batters, an increase of 20 compared to the year before. Despite his high walk total, the Dominican native still got batters out due to his work ethic, which scouts have raved about.
“[Guerrero] has some of the best raw stuff of any relief arm in the system,” wrote SoxProspects on their scouting report for Guerrero, “But needs to improve command and control and consistency.”
Regardless of how the roster looks on opening day, Guerrero is a prospect with plenty of promise.
