Luis Guerrero and his success with the Portland Sea Dogs
After a strong 2022 campaign at 3 different levels, Luis Guerrero has spent the 2023 season with the Portland Sea Dogs at AA. Despite his overall numbers being a tick down from the previous season, he’s continuing to get strong results.
As the closer, he has mostly pitched in high-leverage situations. So far, he has converted 11 of 13 save opportunities. While that can be seen as a solid rate of success, it hasn’t all been smooth sailing. With a 5.72 BB/9, he’s induced a lot of traffic himself. Still just a young pitcher at 23 years old, he has a ways to go with his command.
Sporting electric stuff like a fastball that can get up to 100 mph (sits 96-98 mph), a splitter in the mid 80s, and a slider in the high 80s, his stuff is certainly above average for the level. Still speaking of his command, another step for him to take is finishing batters with the swing and miss. With an 8.26 K/9, that’s down from his elite rate of 13.62 last season.
An adjustment period is always needed when someone gets promoted from High-A to AA, but come season end you would like to see both of those rates improve. Especially a pitcher who has electric stuff as he does, he could easily find himself pitching in the big leagues. With all of this said, he still holds an incredible 1.27 ERA. While ERA isn’t the be-all for a reliever, it is still a sign of productive performance to have such a low rate.
With just one earned run in his last nine appearances, the flamethrowing right-hander will look to continue his hot streak. The Portland Sea Dogs will finish their series against the Reading Fightin Phils this weekend.
