Kyle Teel promoted to Double-A
For Kyle Teel, the last few months have been full of unforgettable moments. After the Red Sox selected the talented catcher with the 14th overall pick in the 2023 MLB Draft, he made his professional debut on August 3. So far, in the minors, he has been on fire at the plate and is again on the move.
On Monday, the Red Sox promoted Teel to Double-A. The move is unsurprising, considering the University of Virginia product has thrived against High-A pitching. In 14 games, Teel posted a .377 batting average while driving in nine runs. He also showed some power with four doubles.
While Teel’s sample size is small, his success at the plate in college has translated to the minors. Through his first 60 at-bats, Teel has posted a .383 batting average and driven in 11 runs. He already has six multi-hit games and has drawn 11 walks. With Teel two stops from majors, anticipation is building among Red Sox fans about what the future holds with him in the everyday lineup.
Although Teel has made headlines with his bat, his promotion is also due to his defensive play. The 21-year-old has only committed two errors in 131 innings of work and caught 10 runners stealing. His ability to make an impact in multiple ways is one of the reasons Teel was one of the best prospects in his draft class.
As the minor league season winds down, the Portland Sea Dogs roster is full of talent. Red Sox fans will get a preview of the future on a nightly basis with Teel in the lineup. He will also be joined by Roman Anthony, who has been a human highlight reel this summer. While Teel is not projected to make his MLB debut until 2026, Monday provided a reminder of why the future in Boston is bright as Teel moved closer to the majors.
