Kyle Teel on fire since promotion to High-A Greenville
Red Sox first round draft pick Kyle Teel has been swinging a hot bat since his promotion to High-A Greenville.
Teel went 3-for-4 with two runs, one walk and one strikeout in the Drive’s 8-7 victory over Greensboro on Saturday.
The catcher out of the University of Virginia is 9-for-14 (.643) with one double, five runs, five RBIs, two walks and two strikeouts in three games since joining the Drive last week.
Teel began his professional baseball career with the FCL Red Sox, where he went 3-for-7 with one homer, two runs, two RBI and two walks.
In addition to his sizzling bat, Teel has thrown out two runners who have tried to steal on him while he’s been behind the dish.
Boston selected Teel with the 14th overall selection back in July. The 21-year-old signed slightly under-slot for $4 million dollars.
Since joining the Red Sox organization, he is now ranked as a top five prospect on MLB Pipeline. Teel is ranked No. 4 overall with the website.
“Extremely athletic for a backstop, Teel has average speed but will lose some quickness the longer he remains behind the plate,” wrote MLB Pipeline. “He used his plus arm strength to throw out 38 percent of basestealers this spring and his receiving continues to improve as he gains more experience. He split time between catcher and right field as a freshman and moves well enough to handle an outfield corner in pro ball.”
