When the Red Sox selected Kyle Teel with the 14th overall pick in the 2023 MLB Draft, they added one of the best college bats available to their system. In three years at the University of Virginia, he posted a .343 batting average while driving in 155 runs. So far, in the minors, Teel has built on his success in Charlottesville and has been a hits machine.
Through the first 36 at-bats of his professional career, Teel has posted a .417 batting average and drawn six walks. While spending time in the FCL and High-A, the New Jersey native has recorded five multi-hit games. His ability to make an immediate impact is an encouraging sign against advanced competition.
Additionally, the former first-round pick is excelling behind the plate. In 72 innings of work, Teel has not committed an error and caught eight runners stealing. He has also turned three double plays and recorded 68 putouts in 79 chances. As Teel did as a Cavalier, he is providing elite defense and offense regardless of the opponent.
While his sample size is small, Teel’s play has been hard to ignore. He is rated as the Red Sox’s No. 4 prospect by MLB Pipeline and is seen as the catcher of the future. Since making his pro debut on August third, the 21-year-old has shown why he is held in high regard. His MLB debut is projected to come in 2026, but that could change if he continues to excel offensively.
Teel will be a player to watch as the season winds down. In seven games since his promotion to Greenville, he has posted a .414 batting average and recorded the first two doubles of his minor league career. On a daily basis, Teel is showing why he is one of the best players in his draft class.
