Kutter Crawford throws five scoreless innings on Sunday in the victory over the Mariners
The Red Sox turned to right-hander Kutter Crawford on Sunday after placing Nathan Eovaldi on the injured list.
Crawford tossed five scoreless innings in a 2-0 victory against the Seattle Mariners.
The 26-year-old hurler retired eight of the first nine batters he faced, four by strikeout. Crawford struck out seven in total while walking four and surrendering one hit.
The bullpen would step up and hold the Mariners offense at bay. Five Red Sox relievers held Seattle to the lone hit and struck out 10 in total.
This was Crawford’s best appearance of the season for Boston. Crawford has gave up 10 earned runs over 10 2/3 innings in eight previous appearances for the Boston this season.
The righty has also struggled at Triple-A Worcester, posting a 7.43 ERA in four appearances with the Woo Sox.
Following the game, Crawford talked about his spot start. “Trusted my pitches a little more,” Crawford said. “My command still wasn’t great. I can be better there. But I trusted my cutter and I was mixing my pitches pretty good.”
With Eovaldi and Garrett Whitlock on the injured list, Crawford has a chance to stick in the rotation. Manager Alex Cora will map out his rotation for the rest of the week. It’s likely Crawford could pitch against the Cardinals at home this coming weekend.
