Kutter Crawford's 2022 season has been full of ups and downs. The former 16th-round pick began the season in the bullpen and posted a 9.00 ERA in April. Due to his struggles, he was optioned to the minors in May before being recalled in June. Since his return, Crawford has been a different pitcher.
After posting a 4.00 ERA in June, Crawford has been nearly unhittable in July. In 16.1 innings of work, he has allowed four earned runs and struck out 20 batters. The 26-year-old has allowed one home run in that span and only issued three walks. As injuries have decimated the Red Sox rotation, the Florida native has stepped up.
Additionally, the Red Sox rookie has shown an ability to pitch deeper into games. In three outings this month, Crawford has pitched at least five innings in all of his appearances. Those outings have come against AL East opponents such as the Rays and Yankees. He has held those playoff-caliber lineups to a .200 batting average.
While the 2022 campaign is far from over, Crawford is emerging as an effective piece. Due to his recent play, the Florida Gulf Coast product now has a 4.50 ERA this season. He has shown the ability to make adjustments which is critical for any young pitcher.
As the Red Sox look to rise in the standings, Crawford could be relied on heavily in the second half. He has shown the ability to pitch out of the bullpen or rotation, which will be essential with Chris Sale back on the injured list. Boston will have to be creative to fill the spot of their ace, which could include using Crawford in a hybrid role.
Regardless of what moves Boston makes, Crawford will be a player to watch. Over the last month, his control has improved, and he has pitched out of trouble. He has also been able to limit extra-base hits. If those trends continue, then Crawford’s rookie season will be a success.
