Kiké Hernández mired in 0-for-27 slump, ‘It just sucks. I need to be better’
Red Sox shortstop Kiké Hernández is struggling mightily at the plate. Through the first 11 games of the season, he is 3-for-36 (.083) and is in a horrendous 0-for-27 slump since April 2.
“I think you go over a week without a hit, it’s going to be tough at any point in the year no matter when it is,” Hernández said. “It just sucks. I need to be better.”
Hernandez’s slump has stretched over the last eight games. In addition, defensively he’s struggled committing five errors early on this season.
“I don’t really have much other than I’ve (expletive), that’s it,” Hernández told reporters postgame.
When asked whether or not the pitch clock is the reason for his struggles early on, Hernández refused to use that as an excuse.
“If it’s getting fast, we need to find a way to slow it down,” he said. “What’s fair is fair for both teams. They have the clock too. Last night was a tough game and tonight we were just kind of flat. I don’t know if it was from the night before or what. We didn’t really have it today.
“We scored two runs in two games,” Hernández said. “It’s tough to win like that. We just need to do a better job of putting together good at-bats, keeping the line moving and getting big hits.”
Manager Alex Cora is planning on giving Hernández a day off on Wednesday. With the team set to face Rays right-hander Taj Bradley, he wants to get more lefties in the lineup.
“One of them two is gonna get an off-day tomorrow. So, (Christian) Arroyo and Kiké,” Cora said.
The offense overall needs to start picking up some of the slack and helping out it’s pitching staff. Hernández is a big part of the Red Sox lineup, Cora needs his shortstop to get it going at the plate and soon.
