Kenley Jansen will not play for the Netherlands in WBC (report)
On Tuesday, Bob Nightengale of USA Today announced that Red Sox closer Kenley Jansen would join the Netherlands in the World Baseball Classic if they advanced to the quarterfinals.
That is no longer the case.
Jansen told WEEI’s Rob Bradford that he will not be participating in the WBC and will remain with the Red Sox.
The new Red Sox closer made his spring debut on Saturday. He made quick work of the Astros throwing 14 pitches. Most importantly, he beat the pitch clock every time, according to Ian Browne of MLB.com.
Jansen has always been known for his slow pace on the mound, averaging 25.6 seconds between pitches with the bases empty and 31.4 seconds with runners on last season.
The right-hander has adapted well this spring to the new rules and looked comfortable in his first outing.
Jansen is coming off a 2022 season where he finished with 41 saves along with a 3.38 ERA and 1.05 WHIP over 64 innings in 65 appearances.
