Kaleb Ort has yet to give up an earned run for WooSox
In 2022, Kaleb Ort had 16 saves for the WooSox as their main high leverage pitcher. While the success hasn’t translated to the MLB level, Ort found himself on the Opening Day roster to begin the 2023 season.
The Boston Red Sox optioned Ort to Worcester on May 6th. Since then, the 31-year-old has had the chance to take a step back and really take a look at his game. That includes adding a cutter that should help him land some better results.
Ort has appeared in six games since his demotion, and the results have been excellent. In his six innings of work, Ort has only given up two hits. He has punched out eight batters and has yet to allow an earned run. The command hasn’t been the best, as he has walked a batter in five of his six outings so far. However, he has been able to work around those walks and get out of innings unharmed.
His most recent outing was one of his best yet for the WooSox. He worked around a walk in the 9th inning on Tuesday in Scranton to strike out three.
The velocity has always been there, and its a huge reason Ort found himself on the Opening Day roster this year. It will be interesting to see what the Red Sox do with him now. It might be a case of gaining confidence back in Worcester and getting another shot at some point this year in Boston. It’s been a revolving door on the IL for the Red Sox bullpen, so if Ort can gain confidence and throw strikes, he wouldn’t be the worst option for another chance. Due to being on the current 40-man roster, the Michigan native will always be one call away from another promotion.
