Justin Turner gives funny reaction on social media to Shohei Ohtani’s massive $700 million contract
Red Sox free agent infielder Justin Turner took to X (formerly Twitter) and posted his reaction to massive $700 million contract Shohei Ohtani will sign with the Dodgers.
Following the news, Turner posted, “I believe JFK said, ‘a rising tide lifts all boats’ well in that case the boats are flying!!!”.
He also posted a quick fun-fact, letting fans know he owns a 0.00 ERA as a pitcher.
“For the record, I have a career 0.00 ERA,” posted Turner.
The veteran made one pitching appearance in 2021 when he was a Dodger, he didn’t allow a run while on the bump.
His appearance came in a 5-0 game against the Rockies on Aug. 29, 2021. Manager Dave Roberts utilized Turner on the mound to give his bullpen a break in the game.
Turner’s lighthearted joke about being a two-way player will not land him an Othani-sized deal. The 39-year-old does have interest in returning to the Red Sox next season. According to MassLive’s Chris Cotillo, Turner is expected to land a multi-year deal this winter as a free agent.
While at Pedro Martinez’s Foundation Gala in November, Turner told reporters he would love to come back to Boston.
“I would love to be back with the Sox. I think the crazy thing is that as great as our experience was, we finished in last place in the AL East. What I’ve heard from all these guys, Pedro included, is how amazing this town is when you’re making a playoff run,” Turner said. “I want to know what it's like to play in a playoff game here for the Red Sox -- not against them.”
Turner also told reporters that he has a conversation with chief baseball officer Craig Breslow, but it was more of the casual nature than truly talking business.
“I sat down in the clubhouse with [Breslow] maybe the day after he was hired. We had about an hour conversation and got into certain things,” said Turner. “It’s very new for him. It was very new for him at the time. He’s still trying to get to know everyone in the organization and it was very casual. It wasn't very much business.”
In addition to the Red Sox, the DBacks and Mariners have been linked to the slugger.
Turner played the second-most games (146) for the Red Sox this past year and recorded 96 RBIs, second behind Rafael Devers’s 100. He collected 154 hits and 23 home runs while notably batting .338 with runners in scoring position.
