Juan Chacon has "signature game" for the Salem Red Sox
Boston Red Sox prospect Juan Chacon has the unenviable position of playing on a loaded Single-A roster. Chacon finds himself in a lineup flanked by Miguel Bleis, Cutter Coffey, Roman Anthony, and Allan Castro. Don't forget Mikey Romero is returning soon, too.
With talent like that around him, Chacon could easily be overshadowed. So he needs to stand out in some way. For the first two weeks of the season, that “way” has been his defense.
The 20-year-old has made multiple defensive gems while patrolling the outfield this season. Including this bonkers play on Wednesday.
Wednesday's game featured more than just some signature Chacon defense, though. It also saw him flash some of his offensive potential.
Heading into April 19, Chacon was slashing .130/.382/.130 (3-for-23). The only positives you could give about his offense were his eye (eight walks compared to seven strikeouts) and his base running (three steals in four attempts).
On Wednesday, Chacon doubled his hit total. The right-handed hitter went 3-for-4 with one triple, two RBI, and one steal. Suddenly his slash line is a much more palatable .222/.421/.296. Okay, still not great. But the improvement is there.
Chacon has given the Salem Red Sox phenomenal defense in the outfield this year. His patience at the plate helped keep him above water during a slump to start the season. Now the breakout game has come.
Boston has a lot of talent in their farm system. Plenty of it is in Salem. Due to that, it's easy to be overlooked. Juan Chacon has used his glove to begin carving out a legacy in Single-A. Now it looks like he's brought a bat with him as well.
