Joely Rodriguez impresses in first spring outing, strikes out the side
The Red Sox played host to Team Puerto Rico at JetBlue Park on Wednesday night. In front of 8,715 fans, Boston defeated Puerto Rico 9-3 in this exhibition game before they begin play in the World Baseball Classic on Saturday.
New Red Sox left-hander Joely Rodriguez made his spring debut in impressive fashion. The 31-year-old struck out Javier Baez, Christian Vazquez and M.J. Melendez in the top of the sixth inning.
Rodriguez had shoulder surgery during the offseason and Boston had been slowly working him back.
“I was baffled,” Rodriguez said following his appearance. “I feel really really good. Last year I finished with some issues with my shoulder but right now I feel really healthy and ready to go. I see the results today, my arm feels way better and we’re ready for the season.”
Last season, the southpaw reliever had a 4.47 ERA (3.23 FIP), 1.35 WHIP and career-high 57 strikeouts in 50 1/3 relief innings over 55 appearances in 2022 for the New York Mets.
The Red Sox signed former Mets lefty to a one-year deal with a club option for 2024 in November. In 2023, Rodriguez will make $1.5 million, with another $2 million possible.
