Jim Bowden: A Red Sox reunion with Andrew Benintendi could make sense
Benintendi will be a free agent at the conclusion of the season
The Red Sox traded Andrew Benintendi prior to the start of last season. The trade of Benintendi was controversial at the time and fans still harp on the deal when they want to spew anti-Chaim Bloom rhetoric.
The Royals are in the basement in the American League Central and could look to move Benintendi before he walks in the winter.
According to The Athletic’s Jim Bowden, a Red Sox reunion could make sense before or at the MLB trade deadline.
In an article on The Athletic website, Bowden looks at players the Red Sox could target if they are buyers at the trade deadline. Boston has turned their dismal start of the season around and are in playoff contention.
Bowden indicates that if Boston wants to upgrade their outfield, Benintendi could make sense. The left-handed Benintendi is enjoying a decent season at the plate. He is hitting. 303 with two home runs, 22 RBIs and 21 runs this season.
Benintendi is going to be a prime trade target for a lot of teams around the league. The 2021 Gold Glove winner has already been connected to the Yankees and Padres.
While many fans might love an reunion with Benintendi, acquiring him to be a rental doesn’t make much sense. Red Sox chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom has the assets to trade for Benintendi but Boston should look to improve their inconsistent bullpen rather than the outfield. Despite me saying that, the outfield should be looked at as well, but not Benintendi.
The Red Sox could use a shot in the arm regarding their outfield. Benintendi could slide back into left field but re-acquiring him gives the Red Sox another left-handed bat. Boston would be better suited to find a right-handed bat.
The idea of bringing Benny doesn’t make a lot of sense for the way Bloom has constructed this current team. Fix the bullpen and look for another righty in the lineup.
