If you were hoping for a quiet lazy baseball Sunday, unfortunately Mariners outfielder Jesse Winker had other plans.
In the top of the second inning in Anaheim, Angels starter Andrew Wantz hit Winker with a pitch. After that, Winker decided to channel his inner-Amir Garrett and began to charge the entire Angels bench.
The home plate umpire tried to hold back Winker but was not able to, he charged the bench and punches were thrown.
Players from both teams would push and shove each other, others threw fists at one another. Angels third baseman Anthony Rendon, who recently went onto the injured list with a broken wrist, used his left hand to get into the face of Winker.
The two teams distain for one another began on Saturday night when a pitch sailed past the head of Angels star Mike Trout.
The games best player was unhappy following the game and voiced his displeasure to the media.
"If you can't pitch inside, don't pitch inside," Trout said following last night’s game. "If you're going to hit me, hit me in the ribs. Don't hit me in the head. I don't know if that's the intent, but… anything at the head, you don't do that."
Typically the game polices itself when two teams bean each other during a series. The head hunting approach shouldn’t be tolerated in the sport.
The melee on the field provided some excitement between two teams struggling on the field. Eight total players and managers were ejected from the game. They’ll be massive suspensions issued between both sides in the coming days.
