Jarren Duran returns to the Red Sox lineup, Bernardino recalled, southpaw placed on the IL
The Red Sox announced four roster moves on Wednesday, including reinstating outfielder Jarren Duran from his unpaid two-game ban.
Left-handed receiver Cam Booser was placed on the 15-day injured list with left elbow inflammation. The club will recall lefty Brennan Bernardino from Triple-A Worcester.
Boston will also option infielder Enmanuel Valdez back to the WooSox. Alex Cora told reporters that Valdez would be a September call-up and optioned him over Mickey Gasper.
"I think it makes sense for September, right?” said Cora. “The sooner, the better. If you want to get Valdy for September, he's going to be available."
Duran returns and will bat in the leadoff spot after he was suspended for two games after using a homophobic slur towards a fan on Sunday. The All-Star MVP had played in 116 games this season with his eyes on playing a full 162 games before sitting on Monday and Tuesday nights.
Booser struggled in his outing on Tuesday night, allowing a hit and two walks without recording an out. The southpaw has been a reliable option for Cora while he’s been on the 26-man roster.
“After his outing yesterday, he came in and he was talking to the trainers, and he said that he felt it right away in the first at-bat,” Cora said. “He tried to grind through it. Obviously, not good for him, not good for us. But I respect the fact that he tried. In those cases, sometimes when you try to push, it makes it worse for the individual. So just get some treatment, hopefully it’s something that he’ll be back sooner rather than later.”
Bernardino had been optioned to Triple-A Worcester but did not report to the club on Tuesday. The lefty has been struggling since July 6, allowing 13 earned runs in 9 1/3 frames in 12 relief outings.
