In the simplest forms of curiosity, what in the world is Boston thinking optioning Jarren Duran back to Triple-A.
Of all the options to option to Triple-A, Duran, of all people is who Boston sent down. It’s dumbfounding. The young star now loses his prospect spotlight, and likely loses some sort of value if the Red Sox were to use him in a package deal for either pitching help or batting production if they even decided to go that route.
Duran went 1-for-4 in the lead off spot for the Red Sox on Friday night and not even 24 hours later he was sent packing. The call-up to Boston was due to the fact that they placed Enrique Hernandez on the 10-day injured list.
But again, the question is this — what is Boston doing with Duran? I don’t want to say that they are wasting his talents, but it surely feels that way. Duran, unlike Bobby Dalbec, who continues to struggle, was making strides to become a legitimate starter for the Red Sox.
If Boston was going to option anyone to Triple-A it should have been Dalbec, who struck out in the bottom of the ninth inning with runners on second and third. The game was tied at one a piece at that point. Dalbec has now struck out 26 times in 77 at-bats and has a miserable .143 average. In his last 22 games combined he has been a strike out victim 19 times with an average of .132. That’s just seven hits over 53 at-bats.
Players like Triston Casas, who again started out slow at the beginning of the season, but has turned it on here in the last couple of weeks should be getting some form of recognition his hard work. And, like Duran, who said this was his “redemption” time in Boston hasn’t been given a fair chance either in 2022.
Dalbec’s numbers in the bigs just aren’t cutting it and his days should be numbered before he gets sent to Triple-A. Or worse.
