Jarren Duran and David Hamilton cause mayhem on base paths; they swipe six bags on Sunday night
The Red Sox ran all over the Yankees, swiping nine bases in the 9-3 win on Sunday night.
David Hamilton showed off his elite speed, stealing four bags, joining Jacoby Ellsbury (who holds the franchise record with his five-steal effort on May 30, 2013) and the late Jerry Remy as the only players in club history to steal four or more bases in a game, per Elias Sports Bureau.
“Hammy kind of carried the load there, but glad I got a couple,” leadoff hitter Jarren Duran said. “It just kind of shows that when we can run the bases like we can, it does a lot for the team and puts us really in a good spot. So I’m really proud of the team for being able to make that accomplishment.”
Duran (two steals), Ceddanne Rafaela, Dominic Smith, and Bobby Dalbec accounted for the additional thefts on the base paths.
The Red Sox players had no idea they had set a new franchise single-game record for stolen bases.
“I had no idea,” Duran said. “I didn't know about the record until they put it up on the big screen. I was like, ‘Oh wow, we set a record.’ But records are meant to be broken. So I'm sure ours will be broken eventually. So it doesn't really mean much, but we're gonna keep doing our thing.”
The Texas native leads the Red Sox in steals with 18, and Duran has 17 and is on pace for 23 triples, which would set a new Red Sox franchise record. Both Hamilton and Duran are incredibly fast and offer something atop the Red Sox lineup that fans haven’t seen in years.
Hamilton was electrifying on base, showing off the reason why he set single-season stolen base records for both the Portland Sea Dogs (70) and the WooSox (57) in back-to-back years.
“That was fun,” Hamilton said. “Probably the loudest baseball atmosphere I've been a part of, and it was a good experience.”
