James Paxton to make another rehab start for the WooSox on Sunday
Red Sox lefty James Paxton is set for another rehab start on Sunday for the WooSox on Sunday.
The left-hander is coming off his last outing on Tuesday where he struggled some with his command.
The 34-year-old pitched 4 1/3 innings surrendering three hits, giving up five runs, four earned runs, walked four while striking out five batters. He threw 82 pitches, 42 of them for strikes, while seeing his fastball top out at 96 mph.
“I think he left his soft pitch up. After that home run, he seemed to have really good line on his fastball. It started to jump a little bit. He got quite a few swings and misses after that home run on his fastball,” Tracy told reporters post game.
It’s still unknown if Sunday’s start will be Paxton’s last rehab start.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora gave reporters some insight on Friday afternoon, prior to the series opener against the Guardians.
“It might be his last one, it might not be,” Cora said to reporters. “He’s feeling OK, not great as far as mechanics and all that stuff. Healthy, he is. But obviously, he’s still going through the process. His mechanics and all that stuff. He was on track and then we had to slow him down. That’s why we have to be very smart about this.”
With Garrett Whitlock landing on the injured list with right elbow ulnar neuritis, Brayan Bello will was added to the 26-man roster. Boston would welcome another healthy arm to their pitching staff, Paxton is close to returning and the Red Sox could use another established starter.
