James Paxton struggles in latest rehab outing for the WooSox
Red Sox left-hander James Paxton took the mound on Tuesday night for the WooSox. The southpaw was making another rehab outing following his hamstring injury in spring training. Paxton wasn’t sharp and struggled with his command at times.
The 34-year-old pitched 4 1/3 innings surrendering three hits, giving up five runs, four earned runs, walked four while striking out five batters. He threw 82 pitches, 42 of them for strikes, while seeing his fastball top out at 96 mph.
Command was an issue for Paxton to begin the game. WooSox manager Chad Tracy thought his starter pitched well after the homer given up to Rodolfo Duran in the second inning.
“I think he left his soft pitch up. After that home run, he seemed to have really good line on his fastball. It started to jump a little bit. He got quite a few swings and misses after that home run on his fastball,” Tracy told reporters post game.
Paxton is expected to pitch again on Sunday for the WooSox. This would be the first time with the WooSox that he would be making two consecutive starts in the same week.
Last week, Paxton pitched in relief of opener Taylor Broadway against the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs. He was expected to pitch five innings but only last 2/3 innings throwing 43 pitches, 25 for strikes. Paxton was shelled for seven earned runs while only recording two outs in his brief stint.
