Jakobi Meyers continues to build trust with Mac Jones, enters the season as No. 1 WR target
The New England Patriots lack a true No. 1 wide receiver on their roster. This offseason, the Patriots acquired DeVante Parker from the Dolphins. Despite Parker’s presence on the Patriots offense, Jakobi Meyers is the No. 1 wide receiver for Jones.
Meyers has led the team in receptions and receiving yards each of the last two seasons. The 25-year-old receiver had 83 receptions last season with 866 yards receiving with two touchdowns. Those two touchdowns are the only two scores for his career.
Meyers has caught 248 balls in 46 career NFL games.
The 6-foot-2 wideout has only played under Josh McDaniels offense over the last three seasons. It’s been no secret the Patriots have implemented a new offense with Matt Patricia at the helm.
The third-year undrafted receiver is continuing to build a rapport and trust with second-year quarterback Mac Jones.
“He’s just a tough, smart football player. I’ll take him on my team forever, hopefully," Jones said of Meyers. "… I trust him. We see the game the same way, sometimes without even talking about it."
If Meyers can start making noise in the red zone for Jones and this offseason, he could be a sneaky go-to target. Parker will likely see some production in the end zone in addition to the running backs. Meyers needs to become a threat in the red zone to be a respected No. 1 option in the NFL.
"His leadership has been crazy this year. He's always in the building, and he knows what he wants. It's been helpful for us. We are just trying to make sure we are there for him," said Meyers about Jones.
