After a dreadful start to the season, Jake DeBrusk is starting to find his groove offensively. The former first-round pick entered the 2023-2024 campaign with high expectations after finishing his sixth NHL season with 27 goals and 50 points. However, he struggled to get on the scoresheet consistently until the last week of December.
In his last three games, DeBrusk has recorded two goals and dished out three assists. He has factored into five of the Bruins last 14 goals and has 16 points on the season. With the 27-year-old at his best, the Bruins have looked unstoppable after a rough stretch.
Additionally, during his hot streak, DeBrusk has gotten back to what made him successful, which was being aggressive with the puck. Against the Devils on December 30, he ended his 11-game goal drought when he drove to the net and snuck the puck past Devils goaltender Vitek Vanecek. It was a welcome sign for the Bruins, who have been waiting for him to heat up.
While DeBrusk has made positive contributions that don’t appear on the score sheet, his lack of scoring was alarming. After the retirements of Patrice Bergeron and David Krejci in the summer, the Bruins needed their talented winger to build on his career year to be successful. In Boston’s recent victories, Debrusk has provided a reminder of the impact he can make.
Although this season has been full of ups and downs, the Edmonton native is showing that he can still be a valuable piece. He also regained his confidence on the power play with three assists on the man advantage in his last three games. Before that, he had one power play point.
As the trade deadline approaches, DeBrusk will be a player to keep an eye on due to his expiring deal. However, after a quiet stretch, the talented winger has shown why he was a first-round pick and sparked Boston’s recent winning streak.
