Jacob Webb is a prospect who showed promise in 2022
During the Red Sox’s 2022 season, the bullpen was one of their biggest weaknesses. Due to injuries and inconsistency, securing a win, more often than not, was not an easy task. In the minors, however, a few players provided hope for the future. One prospect who continued to show promise was 2021 draftee Jacob Webb.
In 44 games, Webb posted a 3. 18 ERA in 56.2 innings of work. The Dayton native continued to rise through the system as he spent time at three different levels. While playing various roles, he struck out a career-high 88 batters and only walked 28.
Additionally, the former 14th-round pick held opponents to a .222 batting average. As he kept opposing hitters off balance, he saw more opportunities in high-leverage situations. After only getting one save opportunity in his first professional season, the former 406th overall pick converted 10 of his 13 save opportunities.
Although Webb has had success at every level, he struggled toward the season's end. He gave up two runs in three innings of work in two games for Portland. The Red Sox prospect was unable to limit hard contact and surrendered one home run. However, his strikeout stuff was still on display as he recorded four punchouts.
Due to his impressive season, the Miami University product saw his stock rise. Through 52 career appearances in the minors, he has a 2.75 ERA. While he is not currently on the Red Sox's top 30 prospect list, that could change in the future.

In 2023, he will likely start the season in Double-A, and if his success continues, then Webb could make his way to Worcester at some point next summer. He possesses a fastball that tops out in the high nineties and a solid slider. The key for him next season will be to continue limiting baserunners.
Currently, Webb is getting in extra work in the Arizona Fall League. He has posted a 6.00 ERA in three appearances and allowed two hits. In his limited action, the right-hander has recorded one save. While those numbers are not encouraging, he is getting valuable experience that could help him next season and beyond.
With the Red Sox bullpen expected to get a total makeover, Webb could be an intriguing depth piece in the second half. He has shown that he can strike out batters and limit hard contact. If he can build on his 2022 campaign, he may no longer be flying under the radar at this point next year.
