On Saturday afternoon, it was another normal day for Red Sox prospect Triston Casas. The prized prospect was in the outfield shirtless and barefoot doing yoga prior to the WooSox game at 4:05pm.
Nothing seemed out of the ordinary for this crisp and cool September Saturday from Polar Park.
As fans began to shuffle into the ballpark, they would begin to learn Casas would not be in the WooSox starting lineup. People began to speculate about the first baseman’s absence.
Casas who was out of the lineup after playing the night before, would watch his WooSox teammates one last time.
Triple-A WooSox manager Chad Tracy said that Casas was held out of the lineup because he was trying to “keep him fresh.”
Following the WooSox win, news broke Saturday night that Casas was getting called up to the Red Sox. In the process, Bobby Dalbec was optioned to Worcester. Dalbec, struggled this season batting .211/.282/.362 with 11 homers and a .644 OPS.
In 76 games this season, Casas has hit .281 with an .889 OPS, 12 homers and 23 doubles and has driven in 41 runs. The lefty missed two months of the Triple-A season suffering ed a high ankle sprain in May.
Casas will be the latest young player to be infused into the Red Sox clubhouse this season. Jeter Downs, Jarren Duran, Brayan Bello, Josh Winckowski and Connor Wong have all made an impact with Boston in 2022.
The 6-foot-4 slugger will likely platoon with Christian Arroyo at first base for the remainder of the season. Boston will get a roughly a month to look at Casas as the club heads into 2023.
Fans at Fenway Park will be treated with seeing Casas likely making his Red Sox debut. Ranked as No. 28 top prospect on Baseball America, he should see them bulk of the time at first base.
With his call up for Sunday, the Florida native will get to enter the 2023 season as a true rookie. Because will accrue fewer than 45 days on the big-league roster this season, he will still be eligible for rookie status next season.
It’s finally Triston Casas day and it’ll happen at Fenway Park.
