It was a good first week for Niko Kavadas in Worcester
Just two years ago, Niko Kavadas was finishing up his stellar senior season at Notre Dame. The Red Sox would end up taking him with their eleventh-round selection in the 2021 MLB draft that summer.
The rise through the system has been impressive to watch. After being drafted in 2021, Kavadas started 2022 in Low-A Salem. He would then be promoted twice and finish the 2022 campaign in Portland. After starting the 2023 season in Portland, Kavadas was recently promoted to Worcester where he is now one call away from the big leagues.
Now, after his first seven games in Triple-A, Kavadas is showing he can handle the pitching at the level. He is currently slashing .300/.533./.550 and just belted his first home run at the Triple-A level on Saturday. The most impressive aspect so far has been his plate discipline, where he has taken nine walks over the seven games played.
SoxProspects.com has Kavadas listed as the 34th best prospect in the Red Sox system at the moment. He sort of takes an unintentional backseat to a few guys in the Worcester lineup ranked ahead of him like David Hamilton, Wilyer Abreu, Enmanuel Valdez, and Ceddanne Rafaela. Then, you throw in the likes of Bobby Dalbec, Ronaldo Hernandez, Nick Sogard, and Stephen Scott all swinging hot bats, it’s easy to see how a guy with so much power like Kavadas is hitting in the 7 and 8 spots so far in Triple-A.
With Dalbec, Scott, Daniel Palka, and Narciso Crook all seeing time at first base this year for the WooSox, Kavadas comes into the fold at an interesting time. With the trade deadline a week away, maybe the herd will be thinned and open a door for everyday playing time over the last couple of months of the season.
