In the tenth round of the 2022 MLB Draft, the Red Sox selected a talented right-hander in Isaac Coffey, out of Oral Roberts with the 309th overall pick. After a solid college career, Coffey joined the Red Sox looking to build on his success. He has done exactly that in his first two seasons in the minors and started to set himself apart.
Through 18 starts, Coffey has posted a 3.06 ERA while striking out 116 batters. During the 2023 campaign, he has split time between two levels. After posting a 2.83 ERA in 11 starts for Greenville, he was promoted to Double-A on June 20 and continued to make headlines.
In five starts for Portland, the California native has held opponents to a .236 batting average and posted a 4-0 record. He has continued to frustrate hitters in that span, as Coffey has struck out 33 batters in 23.1 innings of work. Regardless of the opponent, the former tenth-round pick is showing why the Red Sox wanted him in the organization.
Additionally, Coffey has kept hitters off balance with his three-pitch mix.The talented starter has a fastball that tops out at 91 miles per hour and a slider that can keep hitters off balance. He also can throw a changeup, but that pitch is still a work in progress. The twenty-three-year-old is projected to be a depth arm, but that could change if he continues his recent success against more advanced competition.
As the season winds down, Coffey will be a prospect to watch. He was the talk of Red Sox Twitter on Wednesday night when he struck out ten batters in his latest start. It marked the third time he has struck out at least ten batters in an outing this season. So far in July, opponents are hitting .196 against him.
Although Coffey is not one of the Red Sox’s top prospects, his play recently has been hard to ignore. If it continues, Coffey may no longer be flying under the radar when the 2023 campaign ends.
