Hunter Dobbins lights up box score in start for Portland on Wednesday
Portland right-hander Hunter Dobbins made the start for the Sea Dogs on Wednesday night as they took on Binghamton. Coming into the start, Dobbins had given up 5 runs or more in his last 3 starts.
Wednesday night would be a different story.
Dobbins would end up allowing a run in the first inning, but there would not be much more offense going on for Binghamton after that. The Texas Tech product would end up settling in with 6 scoreless innings after the first and earn the win. Alongside his 7 innings of 1 run baseball, Dobbins struck out 8 batters and walked 0. He would tie his Double-A best of creating 16 swings and misses along the way. He would go on to retire 17 of the last 21 batters faced in the game.
Joe Jacques credits Red Sox teammate on pitch that 'will create misses top of zone'
Red Sox left-hander Joe Jacques earned his call-up to make his MLB debut back on June 12th. If you might recall, it was a bit of a bizarre one with not recording anything on his pitching line before the game being suspended due to rain. “Debut was pretty wild.” Jacques told
The 7 innings thrown by Dobbins would be a career high for his brief Double-A tenure. The 1 run given up would be his lowest amount given up since a start on July 6th.
As we get towards the end of the 2023 season, Dobbins is now 3-4 with a 4.98 ERA in 8 appearances so far in his Double-A career. As a former 8th round pick in 2021, the 23-year-old has been promoted twice dating back to last season. A strong finish in Portland this year could have him on the map for Triple-A Worcester to start next season.
