Huge brawl erupts between the Portland Sea Dogs and Binghamton Rumble Ponies
There was a big time donnybrook that took place on Hadlock Field between the Portland Sea Dogs and Binghamton Rumble Ponies.
The incident occurred during the bottom of the third inning with the Rumble Ponies leading 3-1. The bases were loaded when Red Sox prospect Tyreque Reed stepped to the plate. On a 1-2 pitch, Rumble Ponies right-hander Marcel Renteria would drill Reed on the hand.
As Reed was jogging down to first base, it looked like Renteria mouthed something to Reed. This resulted in the 6-foot-1, 250-pound Reed in changing his course from first base to Renteria’s direction. Reed approached the right-handed hurler and would throw a haymaker knocking him to the ground.
Once fists started flying on the field, benches for both teams would clear.
“Dugouts are clearing, punches are being thrown,” the Sea Dogs play-by-play announcer said. “It is an all-out brawl. And here come the dugouts. Oh my goodness. They are still going at it.”
Renteria remained on the ground and appeared to be hurt following the on-field skirmish. The umpires ejected Reed, Renteria and Red Sox prospect David Hamilton. According to the Boston Globe’s Alex Speier, Hamilton was blindsided by Renteria following being hit by Reed.
