Through his first month in the majors, Triston Casas has shown encouraging signs
Earlier this month, Triston Casas made one of the most highly anticipated MLB debuts in recent Red Sox history. With the Red Sox in need of an upgrade at first, they called upon their second-best prospect. While Casas did get off to a slow start, his first month in the majors has created excitement for the future.
Through 21 games, Casas is batting .190 with 11 hits in 58 at-bats. While those numbers don’t jump off the page, he has shown excellent plate discipline and walked 16 times. The Red Sox’s first baseman has made pitchers work to get him out and started to show his power over the last two weeks.
In his past eight games, Casas has homered three times. Two of those came against the Yankees. After a slow start, he is slowly becoming a threat in the Red Sox lineup. While Casas has found his groove offensively, he has been stellar defensively.
Through his first 151 innings in the majors, the American Heritage High School product has not committed an error. Casas has turned 11 double plays and taken the pressure off the Red Sox infielders. He has not seemed to be fazed by the increased pressure. The Florida native has been a bright spot in the field for a team that has struggled defensively.
Additionally, Casas has joined a unique group in his first stint in the majors. On Tuesday night, he became the fifth player in franchise history to his five home runs in their first 20 games. His power surge has come during his best stretch in the majors, as Casas is hitting .400 in his last seven games.
While his average has far lower than the Red Sox would like, Casas has shown progress with every game. He has been able to make adjustments in the majors and has not changed his approach at the plate. As he gets more at-bats in the majors his average should steadily rise. That has raised expectations for the 2023 campaign when Casas will get his first full season in the majors.
Although the Red Sox will not make the postseason, the last month has provided a preview of the future. With Casas in the lineup, first base is in good hands for years to come. For the twenty-two-year-old, the 2023 campaign could be special.
