Hirokazu Sawamura clears waivers and is assigned to Triple-A Worcester
The Red Sox designated right-handed reliever Hirokazu Sawamura for assignment on Sunday. Sawamura has cleared waivers and been outrighted to Triple-A Worcester, per MassLive’s Chris Cotillo.
Sawamura struggled pitching at Fenway Park this season. In 29 1/3 innings, he pitched to a 5.83 ERA giving up 19 earned runs. On the road, he was far better in 21 1/3 innings he posted a 0.84 ERA.
In his last five games, he posted a 8.44 ERA giving up five earned runs in 5 1/3 innings of work. On Sunday against the Rays, Sawamura threw 37 pitches in the sixth inning. In the process he gave up three hits and four earned runs.
Sawamura has spent two seasons with the Red Sox, the 34-year-old reliever has posted a 3.39 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and opponents have hit .238 against him in 103 2/3 innings of work.
