Heyman: Red Sox, Rafael Devers ‘far apart’ in contract extension talks
It’s another day and that means another Rafael Devers rumor. According to the New York Post’s Jon Heyman, the Red Sox and Devers are “far apart” on a contract extension.
Heyman wrote in the Post on Thursday night that the Red Sox have now raised their offer to $200 million-plus. This coincides with recent reporting from Yancen Pujols and Hector Gomez.
Both reporters have stated that the Red Sox have made an offer to Devers. In addition, the offer was “significantly better” than the one offered during Spring Training.
According to Heyman, Devers is looking for a 10 year, $300 million-plus deal.
This spring the Red Sox reportedly offered Devers a extension similar to the one the Braves gave first baseman Matt Olson. The Braves slugger signed an eight-year, $168 million deal.
Devers and his camp rejected the Red Sox offer and went into the regular season with no extension.
“I know my value. I don’t want to be compared with anyone else, regardless of what the position is,” said Devers during the All-Star break in Los Angeles this last season.
Devers had a strong 2022 season, slashing .296/.358/.521 with 27 home runs and 88 RBIs while vastly improving his defense at third base.
