'Helping the pitchers is number one priority' Ronaldo Hernandez on relationship with WooSox pitching staff
WooSox catcher Ronaldo Hernandez is entering his third season for the AAA club. While he is behind Jorge Alfaro on the catching depth chart for the WooSox, his leadership role and ability to manage the pitching staff have also caught members of the pitching staff’s attention. Red Sox pitcher Josh Winckowski spoke to Beyond the Monster this offseason and raved about Hernandez being one of his favorite guys behind the dish to pitch to last season.
“We had a good season last season and I am excited to see the same guys around here again for another season” Hernandez told Beyond the Monster. “I come in here to play hard and help the pitchers which is result, helps the team win.”
Hernandez isn’t too worried about where he is playing right now. I asked him what his top priority was in 2023 in the organization.
“I just want to play hard and helping the pitchers is my number one priority.”
Following the Opening Day win for the WooSox on Friday, we spoke with manager Chad Tracy about the catching rotation to start the year. Alfaro will be majority of reps and will try to get Hernandez and Caleb Hamilton time as well. Hernandez will make his 2023 debut on Sunday in the DH spot.
Hernandez is 25 years old and is still looking for his first taste in the majors. The catcher was acquired in a 2021 trade alongside infield prospect Nick Sogard from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for Chris Mazza and Jeffrey Springs.
