Greenville Drive Mailbag: Blake Wehunt rewarded for no-hit outing
After baffling hitters on Friday night for the Greenville Drive, Blake Wehunt has been rewarded for his stellar outing. On Monday, the former ninth-round pick was named the South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week for August 12-18. It is the latest milestone for Wehunt, who is putting together an impressive season between Low-A and High-A.
In 18 starts this season, the Georgia native has posted a 3.68 ERA and struck out 93 batters. He has held opponents to a .199 batting average in his second minor league season. Against the Aberdeen IronBirds this past Friday, Wehunt showed just how good he can be.
While Wehunt has struggled at times with the Drive, he did not allow a hit against the Ironbirds in five innings. As he flirted with history, the 23-year-old only walked one batter and struck out six. It was his best outing in High-A and marked the third straight start that Wehunt pitched at least five innings.
As the season winds down, he will be looking to build on his stellar start. Since earning promotion to Greenville on June 4, Wehunt has posted a 4.80 ERA in 10 games. He has allowed five home runs in that span after allowing one in his first eight starts of the season. That is partly due to adjusting to more advanced talent.
Although Wehunt is not ranked as one of the Red Sox’s top prospects, he has shown promise this year. His arsenal includes a fastball that tops out at 95 miles per hour and a slider that keeps hitters off balance. He also has a splitter that has bat-missing potential.
Over the next few weeks, Wehunt will be a player to watch as he aims to finish the season strong and head into the 2025 campaign closer to a promotion.
