Gary Sheffield Jr. joins the “To the Show We Go” podcast to talk about the Yankees offseason and rumors: ‘Alex Verdugo being in left field means that Juan Soto is not’
The MLB Hot Stove has been relatively cold since the conclusion of the World Series. With free agency underway, teams are having conversations with the likes of Shohei Ohtani and National League Cy Young award winner Blake Snell, hoping to entice them to join their respective clubs.
The New York Yankees are no different, the Bronx Bombers are coming off an 82-80 season, which was best for fourth in the American League East, finishing 19 games out of first place.
There’s no doubt that the Yankees are going to be aggressive this offseason, it’s just a matter of how aggressive they’ll be. General manager Brian Cashman has shown his aggressive side, delivering a fiery press conference at the GM Meetings which included a profanity-laden exchange with reporters. He even called out slugger Giancarlo Stanton regarding his inability to stay healthy.
Yankees’ content creator Gary Sheffield Jr., the son of slugger Gary Sheffield has been vocal about one player that could change everything for the organization.
That player, Padres right fielder Juan Soto.
“Juan Soto has to become a Yankee,” Sheffield Jr. said on the To the Show We Go podcast.
“I hope people don't take me serious when I actually think that wants Soto's coming to the Yankees. And of course, this is all predicated on whether or not the Padres are serious. AJ Preller with San Diego is being serious and genuine that he's willing to trade Soto.
“We saw it in Shohei Ohtani. We were like okay, they just don't want to be the they don't want to be the owner that trades an Otani. I understand that they probably feel the same way about Juan Soto because Juan Soto is the best player for the Padres. So for me, yes, that Juan Soto has to become a Yankee,” added Sheffield Jr.
Another name connected to the Yankees has been Red Sox outfielder Alex Verdugo. Sheffield Jr. shares his thoughts on the possibility of Verdugo wearing pinstripes next season.
“He's a pretty good fit for New York,” said Sheffield Jr. “And I'll admit, depending on what else was happening in the organization, like we if they had an all star infield, and things were just running smooth. You could easily argue that Verdugo is the type of hitter just in terms of his philosophy. He's a hitter who makes great adjustments. Obviously, you guys know he's very clutch.
“I'm not after good. That's the that's where my issue is on Verdugo. I think this helps the Red Sox more than it helps the Yankees in my opinion, and it allows for the ceiling of the Yankees essentially to just be stagnant. That's not what I want. In my opinion. You bring a Verdugo and I pretty much know the Yankees are gonna put him in left field. That's just like kind of my my feeling. Him being in left field means that Juan Soto is not and that's not what I want. I want the ceiling to be high in New York.”
