Garrett Whitlock leaves start after just 1 inning
Red Sox starter Garrett Whitlock was removed after just one inning on Sunday at the Rogers Centre in the series finale versus the Blue Jays.
The Sox announce Whitlock is dealing with right elbow tightness.
Whitlock lasted just one inning, giving up one hit, one earned run, one homer to Brandon Belt while striking out one and walking no one.
Earlier this season, Whitlock missed 27 games on the 15-day IL due to right elbow ulnar neuritis. He also began the season on the IL recovering from right hip arthroscopy.
Whitlock didn’t show any potential signs of injury while on the mound in his only inning of work. He allowed a solo blast to Belt and then retired Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to end the frame.
Brennan Bernardino took over for Whitlock in the second inning.
The Sox rotation has taken a hit in recent weeks with losing Chris Sale (left shoulder inflammation) and Tanner Houck (facial fracture).
Corey Kluber is also on the injured list with right shoulder inflammation.
The only certainty moving forward is Brayan Bello will start on Wednesday against the Rangers from Fenway Park. No other names have been mentioned as possible Sox starters this week.
James Paxton is expected to miss a few days due to the birth of his second child. Nick Pivetta is another internal option to come out of the bullpen and start for the Sox.
Whitlock has gone 4-3 with a 5.23 ERA in 10 starts.
