Franchy Cordero’s confidence is growing at the plate
The left-handed hitter crushed his second home run of the season on Sunday
Franchy Cordero crushed a 448-foot home run on Sunday, the longest homer anyone in the Red Sox lineup has hit all season.
In the process Cordero now has belted two homers since his call-up from Triple-A Worcester.
The 27-year-old has 20 hits in 71 at-bats with six doubles, one triple and 12 RBIs. Cordero also owns a four game hitting streak the same as his first base platoon mate Bobby Dalbec.
“A lot of confidence,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora said about Cordero. “It’s not that he’s trying to fit in or trying to do this to survive at this level. Now it’s kind of like, yeah, he knows he’s going to play. And it started with plate discipline when he got here with his walks and not expanding the zone. Little by little, he’s hit the ball hard most of the time.”
Over the last five games, Cordero has shown that confidence hitting .500 (6-for-12) with his homer from Sunday and three RBIs.
To go deeper than his current four game hitting streak, over the last 15 games Cordero is hitting .320 with the two homers and five doubles in 53 at-bats.
Cordero has provided a nice mix in the Red Sox lineup since the release of Travis Shaw. His success has not gone unnoticed by his teammates and Cora. Part of his success at the plate has been the reduction of strikeouts. He currently owns 22.2% strikeout percentage. Cordero’s walk rate is also up from 5.9% last year to 9.9%.
