Franchy Cordero, Yankees agree on one-year contract
The Baltimore Orioles recently released Cordero after signing a minor league contract in December. In 46 spring training at-bats, Cordero hit .413 with two home runs and nine RBI with a 1.100 OPS. The 28-year-old product of the Dominican Republic was among the last round of cuts for the Orioles, but will get a chance in pinstripes as a backup outfielder.
Cordero was a likable figure during his stint in Boston and displayed impressive raw power, highlighted by a 118.6 MPH homer against Phillies ace Zack Wheeler in 2021.
However, injuries and lack of consistent production plagued Cordero during his stint in Boston, as he posted a 33.5% strikeout rate accompanied by a 92 wRC+ in 84 games in 2022.
The Yankees are thin in outfield depth and are likely intrigued by Cordero’s ability to hit the ball hard and play the corner outfield. All signs point to Cordero starting the season on the Opening Day roster, barring an unforeseen move.
Cordero will earn $1 million if in the majors and $180,000 in the minors.
