If you wanted a true feel-good story in the Boston Red Sox system in 2023, you should’ve looked no further than at left-handed pitcher Brendan Nail.
Nail was signed by the Red Sox in 2017 as an undrafted free agent out of Western Carolina. That was even back when the MLB Draft still had 40 rounds of selections. Nevertheless, Nail latched on with Greenville to finish the year and started the season there in 2018.
After the COVID cancelled minor league season in 2020, the Carolina native would end up putting respectable numbers every step of the way leading up to 2023. Nail made quick work in Double-A to start the season with a 0.99 ERA along with a 0.91 WHIP.
The stellar showing in Portland to start the season earned him a quick promotion to Triple-A Worcester in June. Nail would wind up pitching 26 innings over 20 games and picked up 3 saves.
It is the first time in Nail’s professional career he has hit the open market since being an undrafted signee 7 years ago. Last season, WooSox manager Chad Tracy mentioned how trustworthy the lefty was against both sides of the plate. It wouldn’t come as a surprise that a team in need of left-handed pitching depth takes a chance on him during spring training. At just 28-years-old, he still has plenty left in the tank to be a depth piece in Triple-A in 2024.
