When Anderson Espinoza was in the Red Sox system, he was a can’t miss top prospect. The Red Sox traded Espinoza back in 2016 for then Padres starter Drew Pomeranz.
On Friday, the 24-year-old rightly elected for free agency.

He was eligible to elect free agency based on his seven-plus years of minor league experience.
Espinoza’s post Red Sox career was filled with injuries and surgeries. He had two Tommy John procedures, one in 2017 and the other in 2019.
Last season, Espinoza made his major league debut with the Cubs. He pitched in seven games, posting a 5.40 ERA, 0-2 record, struck out 19 batters, 1.636 WHIP in 18 1/3 innings of work.
The Venezuelan native struggled in the minors last season. He posted a 7.55 ERA, 1.649 ERA with a 2-9 record over 21 games.
