Former Red Sox utilityman joins Mets as a September call-up
Pablo Reyes is back in the big leagues.
The former Red Sox utilityman was one of the Sept. 1 call-ups for the New York Mets on Sunday.
He would make his Mets’ debut on Sunday, scoring a run in New York’s 2-0 win over the White Sox.
Reyes joined the Mets following a trade back in May. The 30-year-old has spent the entire season with the Syracuse Mets, following the trade from the Red Sox.
In 58 games with Syracuse, Reyes has slashed .283/.361/.478 with 10 homers, six doubles, two triples, 35 RBI, and 10 stolen bases with a .839 OPS.
“He’s been in this league before, and there’s a lot of different ways he can impact the game and help you win,” manager Carlos Mendoza said following Reyes’ promotion.
Reyes will bolster the Mets bench with the ability to play second base and shortstop.
During his time with the Red Sox, Reyes provided some key moments at the plate, including a memorable walk-off grand slam against the Kansas City Royals in 2023. He also served as a pitcher during games where the score was lopsided in the later innings.
The infielder played in 85 games across two seasons, slashing .260/.312/.335 with two home runs and a .647 OPS.
Boston will travel to Citi Field on Monday to begin a three-game series with the Mets. The Red Sox will see former designated hitter J.D. Martinez, reliever Adam Ottavino, and fan-favorite Jose Iglesias.
