Former Red Sox Rule 5 draft picks made debuts on Monday
The Red Sox had three pitchers taken in the Rule 5 Draft this offseason. Noah Song has been the most talked about player taken in that draft, but has yet to make his Spring debut.
Thad Ward was selected first overall in the Rule 5 Draft by the Washington Nationals. Ward was a former fifth round pick by the Red Sox in 2018. The former Red Sox prospect became the 13th ranked prospect in Washington’s system. Ward faced off against the Cardinals in his debut on Monday and faced a few regulars who will be in the lineup for them on Opening Day. He went through a clean inning and struck out Lars Nootbaar. Ward had missed quite a bit of time from 2020 until 2022. First with the COVID cancelled season in the minors in 2020 and then Tommy John surgery in 2021. Ward had looked to be back on track this season in the Red Sox minor leagues.
A.J. Politi was taken in the first round of the Rule 5 Draft by the Baltimore Orioles. Politi made his debut on Monday against the Rays. He pitched a scoreless inning and also faced a few regulars for the Rays. Politi was fighting for a 40-man spot for the Red Sox and just couldn’t seem to find a spot even after good outings last year in AAA.
