Former Red Sox reliever Hirokazu Sawamura unsure if he’ll pitch in the majors next season
Former Red Sox right-handed reliever Hirokazu Sawamura is unsure if he will pitch in the United States or Japan next season, a source confirmed.
If Sawamure elects to pitch in Japan, numerous teams are expected to show interest in the 34-year-old.
The Red Sox released Sawamura in September after designating him for assignment.
Sawamura was released to allow him to pursue opportunities elsewhere in the league. He remained unsigned for the remainder of the regular season.
The Japanese native posted a 3.06 ERA in 53 innings. He struggled pitching at Fenway Park this season. In 29 1/3 innings, he pitched to a 5.83 ERA giving up 19 earned runs.
On the road, he was far better in 21 1/3 innings he posted a 0.84 ERA.
