Former Red Sox and WooSox left-handed reliever Ryan Sherriff has announced his retirement, per his personal Instagram account.
“13 years, 2 World Series appearances , 2x Triple-A All-Star (2016 & 2017), 1x WBC qualifier, 28th round draft pick from Culver City CA, I can definitely hang my cleats up knowing I gave it all I can,” Sherriff posted. “I want to thank everybody who was on this journey with me for over a decade. Thank you.”
The lefty had a brief stint with the Red Sox this past season, pitching in five games while posting a 2.70 ERA.
While with the WooSox, Sherriff pitched in 21 games, owning a 2-1 record with a 2.82 ERA. Boston recalled the southpaw twice before designating him for assignment in July.
Sherriff elected for free agency versus rejoining Triple-A Worcester. He later signed a minor league deal with the Dodgers and was later released in August.
The 32-year-old appeared in 49 games, all out of the bullpen. He will end his professional career with a 3.50 ERA, 3-2 record, two saves, 51 innings pitched, 41 strikeouts and a 1.294 WHIP. Sherriff pitched for the Rays and Cardinals in addition to the Sox.
