Former Red Sox prospect has a week to make his case
Former Red Sox prospect Noah Song is currently rehabbing with the Phillies AA affiliate, the Reading Fightin Phils. Song was selected by the Phillies in the rule-5 draft this past winter.
Since Song started his rehab on June 28th, he has 30 days to complete the rehab assignment. After the 30 days are up, the Phillies must put him on the active 26-man roster. If they do not decide to do that, or he lasts less than 90 days on the roster, he will be outrighted back to the Red Sox organization.
Noah Song was drafted in the fourth round out of the United States Naval Academy in the 2019 MLB draft by the Red Sox. He was selected so low because of the possibility of his mandatory service in the Navy. Some thought he would slip further down the draft, but the Red Sox selected him with the 137th pick in the draft.
What is most notable is the fact he was selected by Dave Dombrowski’s Phillies. Song was drafted by the Dombrowski administration back when he was with Boston. With Song coming back from his mandatory service, Dombrowski seemed to still value his talent, so he took a flier on the unprotected prospect.
In the Red Sox minor league system, A-ball Lowell, Song posted an ERA of 1.06 in 17 IP, striking out 19 hitters before going on the military list in 2021 (COVID canceled the 2020 season). Although he does not start anymore, he showed promise early on.
It should also be noted that Song was placed on the 15-day IL on March 30th with a low back strain (he would later be transferred to the 60-day IL). So far in his rehab, Song has a 3.52 ERA in 7.2 IP, 11 strikeouts, and a WHIP of 1.83. Is that enough to land him on the Phillies active roster? Only time will tell, as the Phillies need to make a big decision very soon.
