The New York Yankees claimed former Red Sox prospect, infielder Jeter Downs off waivers from the Washington Nationals.
As you know, Downs was one of the three players the Red Sox acquired in the Mookie Betts and David Price trade with the Dodgers.
Downs will join the Bronx Bombers, the same team that Hall of Fame shortstop Derek Jeter played for his entire career. The native of Columbia was named after the all-time Yankee great.
The Nationals claimed Downs off waivers from the Red Sox on Dec. 22, 2022, after he was designated for assignment.
He played 14 games for the Red Sox in 2022, slashing .154/.171/.256 with a homer and four RBI. Unfortunately for Downs and the Red Sox, the former top prospect was unable to live up to expectations. Downs struggled during his time with the Red Sox Triple-A affiliate.
The 25-year-old played in six games for the Nationals, spending the remainder of the season in Triple-A.
The Yankees now have two of the three players acquired in the Betts trade. Outfielder Alex Verdugo was traded to New York during Winter Meetings for three pitching prospects.
