Former Red Sox prospect Chase Meidroth promoted to White Sox 26-man roster
The White Sox are promoting one of the four prospects they acquired from the Red Sox for Garrett Crochet over the winter.
The White Sox are adding infielder Chase Meidroth to their major league roster.
“He’s a first-class kid, and obviously we got to watch the historic things that he did [last year] with the 105 walks; it was incredible,” WooSox skipper Chad Tracy said to reporters on Thursday afternoon. “I knew he was gonna get his chance. We’re proud of him; he works his tail off, he plays hurt, and he was our WooSox player of the year. So to see him get that opportunity, I think we all knew that was coming. We’ll be tuning in, we love that kid to death.”
Meidroth was sent down to Triple-A to start the season after having a slow spring training with only a .154/.313/.179 slash line; however, he has turned it around with Triple-A Charlotte. In 9 games, he is hitting .267/.450/.600 with three homers.
The 23-year-old had a big season for the WooSox last year, slashing. In 122 games, he slashed .293/.437/.837 with 20 doubles, seven home runs, 105 walks, and 13 stolen bases. His 105 walks led the minor leagues, and his .437 on-base percentage ranked third, and his on-base percentage was 35 points higher than the next-closest International League hitter.
The California native played all over the WooSox' infield, seeing time at second base, shortstop, and third base. The infielder was nagged by injuries, causing him to miss time due to lower-body issues. Tracy rested him during series play to try and keep him fresh. His versatility and incredible eye at the plate should immediately catapult him onto the White Sox 26-man roster.
Meidroth has one of the best minor league hit tools, never chasing and consistently making contact. This indicates that he has the potential to hit for a high average and potentially reach base if he makes it to the majors.
