Former Red Sox pitcher Rich Hill was traded to his 13th team on Tuesday. The Pirates traded Hill and first baseman Ji-Man Choi to the Padres at the MLB trade deadline.
Hill doesn’t intend on having the Padres be his final team he’ll play for in the big leagues.
The southpaw told MLB.com’s Justice de los Santos that he has “all intentions of playing” in what would be his 20th Major League season in 2024.
Hill signed with the Pirates in the offseason for one-year, $8 million to help with the rotation and bring a veteran presence into the clubhouse.
The 43-year-old made 22 starts, posting a 4.76 ERA in 119 innings of work prior to the trade.
The Milton, Mass. native pitched five seasons with the Red Sox across three separate stints, the most recent being last season.
Despite his age, Hill’s curveball and cutter still play at the major league level. The veteran will provide depth within the Padres rotation, filling former Red Sox starter Michael Wacha’s role while he’s on the injured list.
Hill will join a starting rotation consisting of Yu Darvish, Blake Snell, Joe Musgrove, and Seth Lugo.
