Former Red Sox minor leaguer Pedro Castellanos signs with the Padres
After spending the seven seasons in the Red Sox organization, first baseman and outfielder Pedro Castellanos has signed with the Padres, per the transactions log.
Castellanos became a minor league free agent in November after a successful 2022 campaign. The 25-year-old split time between both Double-A and Triple-A last season. The 6-foot-3 slugger hit .274 with 128 hits, 28 doubles, three triples, 13 homers, 71 RBIs in 121 games.
Per the scouting report from SoxProspects, Castellanos has “Plus raw power but historically has had curiously well below-average in-game power. Power comes mostly from strength.”
SoxProspects would go on to add, “Potential bat-first organizational player. Bat will be tested as he progresses through the system as he has yet to show the bat speed or approach to succeed against more advanced pitching. Development will depend largely on fixing his issue of failing to tap into his raw power at all.”
The Venezuelan native will now bring his power potential to the Padres organization with the hopes he can make the major league roster.
